What Happens If You Fail To Get Wisdom Teeth Extracted

Posted on 5/9/2022 by Young Jun DDS MD FACS
What Happens If You Fail To Get Wisdom Teeth ExtractedOne of the biggest reasons you may need oral surgery is to get wisdom teeth removed. Based on whether or not your wisdom tooth has erupted, you may want to get it extracted. What if you don't? Many things can happen if you fail to get the wisdom teeth removed. From overcrowding to decay and infection or even pain, you may suffer many complications.

Overcrowding

Many people lack enough space for wisdom teeth or third molars. Therefore, if you fail to remove them, they will not grow properly. Overcrowding is likely to occur, which can, in turn, shift your other teeth. You may notice that your teeth are starting to overlap with each other. This can make it difficult to clean and brush.

Impact Gums and Jaw

If your wisdom teeth are impacted, meaning they have not erupted, they can cause pain in the gums. Additionally, their growth can move to the jawline where they interfere with the closing and opening of the jaw. Removing the wisdom will negate the complications that follow if you fail to extract them.

Decay and Infection

There is a greater potential for infection or decay if you let wisdom teeth remain. Whether impacted or not, wisdom teeth are prone to not only decay but also infection. You can even have wisdom teeth that are growing properly, but their location makes it difficult to reach and brush or floss. As a result, you have increased odds of having gum disease.

When to Let Wisdom Teeth Remain

In some situations, wisdom teeth may not need to be extracted. Depending on your specific situation, a dentist may recommend that the third molars stay. If your teeth and gums are not being affected or they are healthy, a dentist can recommend you have the wisdom teeth stay. Also, if wisdom teeth grow in completely or they fully erupt, you can have them remain. Besides, if they are positioned correctly and your bite aligns properly with the opposing teeth, they can remain. Additionally, if you can reach and clean these teeth properly, you can have them stay. Come to our dental office to examine your wisdom teeth and see if they should be extracted.
