What are the orthognathic surgery and temporal mandibular joint symptoms?

Posted on 3/21/2022 by Young Jun DDS MD FACS
What are the orthognathic surgery and temporal mandibular joint symptoms?Orthognathic surgery also referred to as corrective jaw surgery or jaw surgery, is the surgical manipulation of the dental and facial bone and jaw structure as a corrective measure to restore the proper and anatomic functionalities of the structure. This surgery aims to correct conditions related to the growth, structure, airway, sleeping, malocclusions, TMJ disorders and general jaw functions. Oral or maxillofacial surgeons are experienced professionals with extensive training in medical, operation and management of these conditions.

Orthognathic surgery helps correct abnormalities that could not be treated using non-invasive procedures for bite problems. This surgery helps improve the functionality, appearance and self-esteem of patients. This type of surgery is often conducted after years of non-invasive operations, for example, braces. It is usually sought after when non-invasive procedures prove fruitless in correcting the dysfunction.

Symptoms of TMJ disorder

The sliding joint connecting the skull and the jaw is called the temporomandibular joint. This is when a patient experiences severe pain and tenderness of the jaw that refuses to subsidies after general treatment and medication. TMJ disorder refers to any abnormality that arises from this joint. Pain and discomfort from this region are most often temporary and does not require any medical intervention. In rare cases, however, it requires surgery.

Pain in one or both temporomandibular joints restricts normal jaw movement, sharp and aching pain in the ear region, facial pain, and jaw locking, making it hard to perform normal jaw movements like speech and eating. This pain or disorder results from dislocation or erosion of the disc joint, osteoarthritis, trauma and any other impact on the jaw. Other symptoms include clenching and teeth grinding, dizziness, a change in the alignment of upper and lower teeth, jaw popping or clicking, numbness or tingling, and limited, painful jaw motions.
