How TMD and Your Memory Are Related

Posted on 5/24/2021 by Young Jun DDS MD FACS
How TMD and Your Memory Are RelatedEven when we are along, we all tend to talk every day. This makes our jaw a part of our body that is used extremely frequently. The temporomandibular joint is the one that connects your jaw to your skull. This joint is the crucial piece of being able to chew, talk, yawn, and anything else that requires you to move your jaw. A temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is one that affects or limits this joint, and may make it hard for you to engage in one of these functions. In some cases, TMD affects way more than just your jaw and behaviors associated with your jaw, but it can even affect your memory.

TMD and Memory

TMD comes with a lot of chronic symptoms, meaning some of these symptoms significantly impact a person's life. Also, because our mouth and jaw are used so frequently, these symptoms are also extremely frequent and ongoing. Some of the major symptoms associated the TMD are facial tenderness, difficulties chewing and eating, jaw clicking, ringing in the ears, chronic pain, and headaches. These symptoms can also be associated with brain fog, or memory disturbances. Pain and discomfort alone can impact the brain and the memory. TMD has also been linked to other neurological problems such as neuromuscular and neurological disorders, Parkinson's, Tourette's, and others. Getting treatment for TMD can help treat some of the other neurological issues you may be experiencing.

The mouth is the gateway to a lot of what we do. We use it to eat, talk, and breathe. All of these behaviors are ones we engage in all throughout the day. TMD can cause significant distress in an individual's life. If you would like help with symptoms related to TMD, or you would like to learn more about addressing the source of the disorder, please call our office.
