Is Flossing All You Need to Do to Avoid Getting Gum Disease?Dentists, periodontists, and hygienists continue to recommend flossing as an important strategy for the prevention of periodontal or gum disease. The intuition behind this recommendation is because a toothbrush does not completely reach certain areas in-between and around the teeth. This leaves a build-up of plaque in all the places your brush doesn't reach. Research indicates that those who engage in frequent teeth brushing accompanied by flossing are more likely to have healthier gums, and they are a lot less likely to suffer from either gingivitis or gum disease.

The Dangers of Gum Untreated Disease


Any inflammation and/or redness of the gums should be checked right away because it could be the result of gingivitis, which can become gum disease. It can also cause a series of health problems. For instance, it can damage your gums and the bone tissues surrounding them which can eventually lead to loss of your teeth. Gum disease has also been associated with non-oral health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, pancreatic cancer, premature delivery, and others. Other Measures That Can Help You Avoid Gum Disease

They include mouth swishing with mouthwash, maintaining a healthy diet with minimal sugar intake, avoidance of smoking and use of other tobacco products, as well as consistent dental checkups.

Observing simple tasks such as flossing, teeth brushing, and avoiding excess sugar can go a long way in helping your teeth and mouth stay healthy.
