Mini Dental Implants Placentia

Smiling woman with mini dental implants from Placentia Oral Surgery in Placentia, CAMini dental implants are an alternative to dental implants. We use them when a patient needs a smaller implant to fit into a very narrow space or for patients with small teeth. They are also used for replacing front teeth and premolars. Outside of these and other very specific cases they are not used.

This type of dental prosthetic is used as an Implant rather than a prosthetic because it is more secure, which results a new tooth that is more comfortable and easier to use.

What Size are Mini Dental Implants?

Mini implants are about the same diameter as a toothpick, which is very close to the size of a traditional implant. Patients who have lost a lot of bone can still benefit from mini implants, which are often a better choice than traditional implants.

How Long do Mini Dental Implants Last?

A variety of factors affect the longevity of mini implants, such as whether one uses alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs, the quality of one’s implant care and the presence of bone diseases like osteoporosis.

However, each mouth differs, so two patients who get the same kind of implant will experience different results.

Mini Dental Implants vs. Traditional Implants

How do mini implants compare to traditional implants? To answer this question, we need to compare the aspects of each one.

Traditional Dental Implants

Traditional implants are usually made of two pieces with a screw that is inserted into the bone. Inside the implant is a thread that works with many different kinds of dentures, making it a versatile product.

Mini Dental Implants

Mini implants consist of a single solid piece that is screwed into the bone. There is a ball-shaped part on top of the implant that provides support. The denture usually has a rubber O-ring that slides over the ball-shaped protrusion.

What are the Differences Between Mini Implants and Traditional Implants?

Mini implants are half the diameter of traditional implants, so it would take two mini implants to give the support that a traditional one provides. This isn’t necessarily a drawback for mini implants, because smaller implants are often needed to fit inside smaller spaces.

As far as longevity is concerned when the two are compared, traditional implants generally last for a longer period than mini implants. This is due to the fact that traditional implants do a better job of balancing the denture’s weight evenly. However, this doesn’t mean that traditional implants are called for in every single case because they can’t fit in every single space.

Another difference is that traditional Dental Implants consist of two pieces, and mini dental implants are made of only one piece. A mini dental implant can last for a long time if you take care of it correctly.

However, just because the two are different doesn’t mean that one is better than the other. As stated above, your case will determine which one we choose. Young Jun, DDS, MD, FACS will make that decision after considering your medical history and individual needs during the consultation.
