Posted on 6/6/2022 by Young Jun DDS MD FACS
Orofacial painMainly describe symptoms of pain and/or dysfunction in the head and neck region. Multiple causes for orofacial pain may exist and the symptoms may include such diverse findings as headaches, neck pain, ear pain, dental pain, facial burning or stabbing sensations, and jaw joint pain.

Neuropathic orofacial pain is a general term employed to describe several clinical syndromes, which may be spontaneous or triggered by local trauma or systemic disorders. Symptomatically these painful syndromes may be episodic or continuous and are often difficult to distinguish from dental pathology. We treat all this through our esteemed doctors.

Ways to deal with orofacial pain

These treatment options for orofacial pain can be quite helpful for someone who is suffering daily. However, it is important to understand that everyone's orofacial pain may differ depending on their condition. TMJ treatment, one of the most common orofacial pains that people experience is TMJ. The temporomandibular joint disorder causes pain in the jaw, head, and facial area. Treating this type of orofacial pain can be done by a dentist or general physician. TMJ treatment may include mouth guards, muscle relaxers, or even jaw stretches. TMJ can cause other symptoms aside from orofacial pain, including tightness or jaw locking.

Neurovascular treatment, mainly neurovascular problems such as migraines is considered for orofacial treatment. Neurovascular problems can be treated through several methods, including pain medication, therapy, and even mouthguards. Migraines, one of the most common neurovascular problems, are often a result of bruxism, which is another orofacial problem. Mouthguards can help reduce bruxism, which will hopefully reduce migraines and other orofacial pains.

When facial, neck, head, or back injuries occur, they will likely result in orofacial pain. Trauma to any of these areas can be treated in several ways, including physical therapy, pain medications, chiropractic adjustments, and dental care.
